If it is DDR2 or DDR3 with 4 DIMM slots, then it will be a dual channel configuration, in which there will be no performance difference between having two slots filled vs all four filled, if only two are filled, it is the matter of if the motherboard supports the RAM sticks and the correct slots to fit them into. Not help remove both again and put the one that was in the second slot in the first slot to see if it actually works. If that does not work you have a bad memory module. If so put the other one back in the second slot. If that works problem solved. If not you may have a bad memory slot so try combinations using the other slots.

RE: Dell PowerEdge T420 Memory upgrade Thank you very much. I was in doubt if it could support two more 16GB Dim 1333MHz because I realized that the motherboard has 12 SIM slots - blanks (6 per. So if you get 2 x 8GB sticks and slot correctly will run in dual cahnnel. The potental issue is if 16GB is not enough. It is impossible to tell when that day will come. So buying a 2 slot Motherboard now may be saving you money now. If 16 GB is not enough then you need to get new memory completely. With 4 slots, just buy more memory if needed. The slots don't need to be all filled. If you want to install a 2gig of ram, i recommend you to buy 2 ram of 1gig! If one get down you will still have 1 gig left, but if you buy 1 stick of 2 gig you will just loose money! Hope it helps ^^.

The motherboard I am getting (ASUS P5WD2) has four slots for memory, total of 8 Gig. I'm going to put 2 Gig in (need it for large video editing files) Am I better off to get 4 512s and fill all slots so if one goes bad I can replace at cheaper price or am I better off to go with two 1 Gig sticks? Will that board run on only 1 stick or does it need to be in pairs? If the memory needs to be installed in pairs, then I think it would be better to have 4 sticks so you can troubleshoot memory.
What do you think?
And what about memory brands? Is Altas Good? If not what is do you recommend?
